Dharamshala: During its second international conference held here earlier from 2-6 January, the Central Tibetan Council of Medicine has elected a new eight-member team of various doctors, which will address various challenges facing the Tibetan medicine today, like enhancing the efficacy of and obtaining wider recognition for the Tibetan cure, promoting better cooperation between the Council and various traditional systems of medicine prevailing in the Himalayan region, etc.

With a total of 280 registered members as of now, the Council recognizes deserving health personnel based on the Tibetan system, including both Tibetans and non-Tibetans, by issuing registration certificates.
The members of the Council include three doctors from the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute, four non-TMAI doctors (including one of Bon), and one allopathic doctor appointed by the Health Department. The new members, four of whom were absent at the time of voting, will now elect the chairman and the secretary of the Council on 23 January.
Menpa Tsering Thakchoe, Menpa Thokme Paljor, Menpa Nyima Tsering, Menpa Thokme, Menpa Dorje Rapten, Menpa Tenzin Loden and Menpa Tenzin Jinpa were elected in the voting conducted on 6 January, by a special four-member team constituted by the Health Department, which in turn appointed one member of the Council, Dr. Tsetan Dorje, the chief medical officer of Delek Hospital.

Addressing some 100 Sorigpas from across Indian and Nepal, along with over 50 Sorig students from the TMAI at the inaugural of the second international conference of the CTCM, Kalon Tripa Samdhong Rinpoche said that distortion and commercialization of traditional Tibetan system of Medicine (Sorig) are the biggest challenges before the Council established after the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile passed the "Exile Tibetan Sorig Doctors & Association Act" in 2003, which was later approved by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
